Our Spotlight Artist:
Carolyn Duke a fellow student of the School of Visual Arts also studied at the Arts Students League and the Greenwich Village Pottery Studio. Carolyn resides in Sullivan County. Her home is a mountaintop setting with views of the Delaware River Valley; which is great inspiration for her pottery.
Carolyn looks to the patterns and rhythms in nature for her inspiration. She is attracted to simplicity in form, finding the beauty in a pot captured in a single gesture. Although simple in form, an amazing amount of energy is captured in every piece. No two pots are ever the same.
Duke Pottery has an art gallery and gift shop featuring the work of photographer Dana Duke and chairmaker Peter Galbert, in addition to jewelry, rustic furniture, paintings, quilts, aromatherapy pillows, scarves, pastels, books, CDs, cards, wool, and maple syrup.

Suzannah Rhea Hadorn!
Whose birthday is today…

They say that age is all in your mind. The trick is keeping it from creeping down into your body. ~Author Unknown

As most artists paint what they are familiar with like their surroundings.
Suzannah is a unique artist with a secure sense of self. As a friend once wrote… “she is not about producing measurable recognizable results.” She draws from the inside… her soul.
More commonly known as shamanic drawings; she paints the spirits of that which are on her journey. The journey is seen relating to the 7-non physical senses, energy and the power of transcendence. Either personal or communal the drawings reflect the imagery the artist experiences.
This type of creating has been described as extremely hard.
As previously written:
This takes a lot of contemplation and courage to move beyond the restrictions of what we have been conditioned to think something objectively is. She passes through many veils in order to expose her uniqueness. Ms. Hadorn has an extraordinary artistic gift and with it she exercises the freedom needed to bring that gift from deep inside herself into the body of her works on paper. Her art is about soul searching, and connecting to the energetic pulse of what is going on around her.

Although she has shown her work in NYC, Brooklyn and various Pennsylvanian Art galleries, and two documentaries have been made about her…
I am proud and honored to have her here, at the Philip Hone Gallery, and above all to call her my friend.

The work is titled; Shadow Trees an original design written and illustrated by Nancy Wells.

First I would like to write a little about each artist. I always find that when I am reviewing a work of art; it is helpful to know about the artist themselves. The artist’s direction and vision have always been a lingering factor to reviewing a work of art.
After doing a community show together last year, we all found out that our mutual friend was suffering with a tragic disease, Alzheimers. We talked about how horrible it was because this artist is so talented and to top that off; she was a strong, creative force within our community. She volunteered many of hours promoting the arts.
So as women of substance…
We wanted to do something, thus began our road... “the one less traveled”
The simple decision to do something for a wonderful friend, as a way we could honor, cherish, and show her our gratitude for all she is.
The woman we honor with this show is our dear friend; Gabriel Feldman.

So, the first woman that I thought of, whom I would love to work with was Nancy Wells. She is an extremely talented and gifted artist with a heart of gold. I see her as my mentor and friend, the artist I strive to be. When I asked her, without any hesitation she agreed to help me. She organized and gathered these fabulous women together for our first meeting. Worked tirelessly on promoting the show and did the invitations…

Scherenscnitte
(Paper cutting)
Wednesday 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Sept 15th, 22nd & 29th
Teacher: Pat Baker Smith
Originating in Germany around the 17th Century, Scherenscnitte was an
economical form of decorating birth records, marriages, and special milestones in
their lives. Each piece is meticulously hand cut from paper, samples of this traditional art form can be scene in museums throughout the country.

Rosemaling
(Tole painting)
Thursday 10:00 am - 12:00pm
Sept. 16th, 23rd & 30th
Teacher: Pat Baker Smith
Rosemaling is another traditional European art form
dating back to the 18th and 19th Centuries.
Traveling artists would create these treasures from farm house to
farm house, and paint in trade for room and board.
Today’s more modern forms are called “Tole painting.”
Which are normally done on tin ware.
$25.00 for 1 class & $15.00 material fee or save on all 3 classes $60.00
& $15.00 material fee.

Starting September 23rd Thursday’s 4-6pm
The first hour will be working on principles and concepts of drawing; the second
hour will be spent on a finished piece of their choosing. The cost of the group
session will be $10.00.

About Town in Honesdale: Table Talk

Our local businesses and artists are joining together for the annual Summer Art Project called “Table Talk!” The Wayne County Arts Alliance has been doing the event for seven years, each year with a new fun project the artists can creatively paint & decorate, sponsored by a local business. Each business sponsors an Artist and the “table-project” is presented in front of each business for a month, and then put up for auction. Benches, Deer, Clocks and this year with our thoughts on recycling and reusing,each table has been revived into a one of a kind, “masterpiece!” This is the WCAA’s major fund raiser of the year. It’s a fun and festive event with something for everyone.
First let me tell you a little about the Wayne County Arts Alliance. The WCAA is an artist founded, non-profit organization dedicated to “enriching our community through the arts. They have programs and events geared to promoting the “arts awareness.” Some examples are: the public art project “Table Talk”, the open studio tour (last weekend), student & community art classes, the Sunday night cinema, scholarships, arts camp, tune and tales, writer’s workshops, the artist’s lounge, music program, roots & rhythm music and art festival, so many great programs.

I hope I didn’t forget anything! I am sure you will all write and let me know.
Over 45 tables will be auctioned off on Saturday, August 28th at the PPL Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center in Hawley PA. The event opens at 6:00pm for the public preview and the bidding starts at 7:00pm punctually.
This is a great way to support the arts and grab yourself and original work of art. The pictures are from the other day, in the Honesdale Park; hope you enjoyed a little peak!

Feeling under the weather today, in bed all day, however just helping a good friend get the word out for a really, great event happening in Honesdale:

HONESDALE HELPS HAITI CONCERT
Sunday, January 24 from 5-7PM (Snow date Sunday 1/31 from 1-3PM)
Grace Episcopal Church
827 Church Street , Honesdale , Pennsylvania
Suggested donation $10 at the door.

Three local musicians, Janet Burgan, Stephen Faubel and Kazzrie Jaxen have teamed up to play a concert to benefit the earthquake victims in Haiti . Stephen and Kazzrie will be performing on Grace's beautiful 1903 Steinway Model O baby grand piano. Janet will be singing and playing guitar. Please join us and make a difference for our Haitian brothers and sisters. Come for part or all of the concert. Let's show Haiti that Honesdale cares!!

All donations will be sent to Episcopal Relief & Development.

Episcopal Relief & Development has disbursed emergency funding for its program partner, the Diocese of Haiti, to help meet immediate needs such as food, water and shelter. The agency is standing ready to support the Diocese with post-earthquake recovery and rebuilding efforts and is partnering with the Diocese of the Dominican Republic to coordinate efforts that can be administered from the border areas. The Diocese already has staff in place and relationships with the Episcopal priests across the border. As communications and access improve, Episcopal Relief & Development will continue to provide updates.

Richard was classically trained in Italy;
Universitas Calluccio Salutati and attended the Art Students League, NYC.
Bachelor’s Degree from Hofstra University and a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School.
Credentials aside;
I love, love his work!
His paintings hang in Galleries across the nation and in Europe.
I am so grateful to have him here with us!

I would like to thank all who made the Art 21 Night a successful event.
I am truly blessed with such great new friends here at the gallery.
My first event was a cozy night, about 15 people attended. The series is phenomenal. The PBS documentary is a well made film about artists; a glimpse of insight into their lives and work.
I have been asked to do a monthly event and I am real excited about doing one. After we complete this Art21, we will be viewing other great documentaries about artists!

If anyone is interested in coming to the gallery; enjoying the art documentary with us(there is four parts)?
I will have sign-ups at the gallery or you can leave us a message here on our web site for me. It would be helpful for buying the events refreshments.

The Philip Hone Gallery is proud to announce the start of our Youth Encouragement Program.
All proceeds raised will go into a scholarship fund for the final winners.
A Monthly Art Contest:
Each month a new topic will be displayed.
September Topic - Wisdom
A paragraph on how the topic applies to the entry is required.

Through our monthly program; we seek to support and inspire our young artists by stimulating them to exercise their original, creative processes on subjects relevant to today.

Monthly Award:
$25.00 Gift Certificate for Art Supplies.
A Certificate of Achievement;
Winner’s work will be displayed with a prominent space for the winning entry at the Philip Hone Gallery and on our web site for international exposure.

At this time; multiple entries are allowed; up to 3 per student.

Yearly Award:

What a great rainy night! Linda was a great example for me to follow in the future; down home and friendly, like someone you wouldn't mind kicking off your boots with and watching your favorite movie.
Linda is extremely personable and patient, just the perfect mannerism to teach this class. I am real happy that we decided to do this!
I can't wait for the class! I hope we have another great night with a little coffee... a little cake and well maybe some wine!
I have seen all my blogger friends doing this; and I'm supper excited to try.

The Artist Statement:
This series was based on trying to capture the impossible. The ghostly images represent the memories that once were. Through special techniques, I was able to capture the nostalgic feeling of past reminiscences.
This series of photographs began by shooting the environments; these were then printed in the darkroom and scanned into the computer. They were digitally altered and the figures were added. These pictures were then printed out on regular typing paper which was then brought back into the darkroom and used as paper negatives. The photographs on this disc are the negatives that were used to create the actual photographic prints. The photographs printed in this manner create a unique texture within the photograph. The prints that will be exhibited show these unique, weathered textures
